You're looking at a pitcher's stats. His ERA sits at 4.50. "Not great," you think. You decide to bet the Over on his game.

Bad move.

What you don't know: this pitcher has been unlucky. His true performance warrants a 3.20 ERA. The balls he allowed should have been outs, but they found holes in the defense. The luck is due to turn — and today might be the day he dominates.

How can you tell? Thanks to xERA — Expected ERA. It's the metric that separates luck from skill. And it's one of ProbWin's secret weapons for identifying value bets in baseball.

Traditional ERA: Useful but Misleading

What ERA Measures

ERA (Earned Run Average) measures the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings pitched.

ERA = (Earned Runs x 9) / Innings Pitched

Example: - A pitcher has thrown 90 innings this season - He has allowed 30 earned runs - ERA = (30 x 9) / 90 = 3.00

The Problem with ERA

ERA measures outcomes, not performance.

And outcomes in baseball depend on many factors the pitcher doesn't control:

Factor Impact on ERA Controlled by the pitcher?
Pitch quality Direct Yes
Pitch velocity and movement Direct Yes
Defense behind him Significant No
Luck (balls finding holes) Significant No
Ballpark (hitter- or pitcher-friendly) Moderate No
Hit sequencing Significant No

A pitcher can throw a perfectly located pitch. The batter makes weak contact. But the outfielder is out of position — base hit. Run scored.

Is that the pitcher's fault? No. But his ERA goes up anyway.

The Example That Says It All

2023 Season — Two pitchers:

Pitcher ERA Perception
Pitcher A 3.20 "Excellent"
Pitcher B 4.10 "Average"

Which one would you bet on for an Under?

Now let's look at their advanced metrics:

Pitcher ERA xERA BABIP ERA - xERA Gap
Pitcher A 3.20 4.05 .260 -0.85 (lucky)
Pitcher B 4.10 3.45 .330 +0.65 (unlucky)

Pitcher A has been lucky — his xERA suggests he should carry a 4.05 ERA.

Pitcher B has been unlucky — his xERA suggests he deserves a 3.45 ERA.

Over the long run, these gaps correct themselves. Pitcher B is actually better than Pitcher A, despite what ERA tells you.

xERA: A Pitcher's True Value

Definition

xERA (Expected ERA) is a metric developed by StatCast (MLB's ball-tracking system) that predicts the ERA a pitcher "should" have, based on:

  • Exit Velocity of batted balls
  • Launch Angle
  • Quality of contact allowed

In short, xERA ignores whether a batted ball fell for a hit or was caught for an out. It looks exclusively at how the ball was hit.

The Logic Behind It

Weak contact (low exit velo, poor angle) -> Usually an out -> Good for the pitcher
Hard contact (high exit velo, optimal angle) -> Usually a hit -> Bad for the pitcher

xERA measures the quality of contact a pitcher allows, not the actual outcomes.

How It's Calculated

StatCast analyzes every ball put in play and calculates the probability of it becoming a hit based on millions of historical data points.

Ball hit at 95 mph, 25-degree angle -> 68% chance of being a hit
Ball hit at 78 mph, 45-degree angle -> 4% chance of being a hit

By aggregating these probabilities across every batted ball against a pitcher, you get his xERA.

The Simplified Formula

You don't need to calculate xERA yourself — Baseball Savant does it for you. But here's the idea:

xERA = f(Average Exit Velocity, Launch Angle, Barrel%, Hard Hit%)

A Barrel is the worst-case scenario for a pitcher: optimal contact (95+ mph, 26-30 degree angle) that results in a hit or extra-base hit 98% of the time.

How to Read xERA

The Reference Scale

xERA Interpretation Pitcher Type
< 3.00 Excellent Ace, elite
3.00 - 3.50 Very good Top of the rotation
3.50 - 4.00 Good Solid mid-rotation arm
4.00 - 4.50 Average #4 or #5 starter
4.50 - 5.00 Below average Replacement-level, spot starter
> 5.00 Poor Concerning

The ERA vs. xERA Comparison

This is where it gets interesting for bettors:

Situation What It Means Prediction
ERA < xERA Lucky pitcher Performance will decline
ERA > xERA Unlucky pitcher Performance will improve
ERA ~ xERA Stable performance No regression expected

The golden rule:

If ERA - xERA > 0.50 -> The pitcher has been significantly unlucky/lucky

Using xERA for MLB Betting

Strategy #1: Identify Unlucky Pitchers (ERA > xERA)

These pitchers are undervalued by the public. Their inflated ERA scares bettors off, but their true performance is much better.

Value bet example:

Game: Yankees vs Blue Jays
Blue Jays pitcher: ERA 4.80, xERA 3.60
The public sees: "4.80 ERA — runs are coming"
The reality: This pitcher is throwing well, he's just been unlucky
Potential value bet: Under on the game

Strategy #2: Fade Lucky Pitchers (ERA < xERA)

These pitchers are overvalued. Their low ERA is impressive, but it's partly driven by luck.

Value bet example:

Game: Dodgers vs Padres
Dodgers pitcher: ERA 2.90, xERA 3.85
The public sees: "2.90 ERA — that's an ace"
The reality: This pitcher has been lucky, regression is coming
Potential value bet: Over on the game, or the opponent's run line

Strategy #3: Compare Both Pitchers' xERA

For Totals bets, what matters is the combination of both starting pitchers.

Team A Pitcher Team B Pitcher Combined xERA Lean
xERA 3.20 xERA 3.40 Low Under
xERA 4.50 xERA 4.80 High Over
xERA 3.00 xERA 5.00 Mixed Dig deeper

Season-long xERA is useful, but last 30 days xERA can reveal recent changes.

A pitcher who carried a 4.00 xERA in April but a 3.20 xERA in June has likely made mechanical adjustments. The market is slow to react.

Where to Find xERA

Baseball Savant (Free)

The official StatCast site: baseballsavant.mlb.com

How to access it: 1. Go to Baseball Savant 2. Search for a pitcher by name 3. Navigate to the "Expected Stats" section 4. xERA is displayed alongside other expected metrics (xBA, xSLG, etc.)

FanGraphs (Free)

fangraphs.com also compiles this data with additional analysis tools.

ProbWin (Built In)

At ProbWin, we integrate xERA directly into our models. You don't need to look up the data yourself — our MLB picks already factor in these metrics.

Other "Expected" Metrics You Should Know

xERA doesn't work in isolation. Here are the complementary metrics:

Metric What It Measures Application
xERA Pitcher's expected performance Totals bets, F5
xBA Expected batting average Evaluating hitters
xSLG Expected slugging percentage Evaluating power
xwOBA Expected offensive value Overall offensive assessment
Barrel% % of optimal-contact balls allowed Danger indicator
Hard Hit% % of hard-hit balls (95+ mph) Contact quality

The Winning Formula for Analyzing a Game

Pitcher A xERA + Pitcher B xERA + Park Factor + Weather = Estimated run total

We'll cover Park Factors in the next article — the perfect complement to xERA.

Full Breakdown: Analyzing a Game with xERA

The Game

Astros @ Rangers — July 15, 2025

The Announced Starting Pitchers

Team Pitcher ERA xERA Gap
Astros Framber Valdez 3.45 3.20 +0.25 (slightly unlucky)
Rangers Nathan Eovaldi 3.80 4.35 -0.55 (lucky)

The Analysis

Valdez (Astros): - His xERA (3.20) is excellent - His actual ERA (3.45) is slightly inflated by bad luck - He's likely pitching better than his ERA suggests

Eovaldi (Rangers): - His xERA (4.35) is significantly worse than his ERA (3.80) - He has benefited from favorable luck this season - Regression is likely — expect him to allow more runs going forward

The Bookmaker's Line

Game total: 8.5
Over: 1.87
Under: 1.95

The Reasoning

  • The public sees two similar ERAs (3.45 vs 3.80) and assumes an even matchup
  • xERA tells a different story: Valdez (3.20) >> Eovaldi (4.35)
  • The Astros should have the offensive edge against Eovaldi
  • But Valdez should keep the Rangers' bats in check

Possible conclusion: Not necessarily a clear Over or Under, but Astros Run Line -1.5 could be a value bet — they're facing an overvalued pitcher.

The ProbWin Process

This is exactly the kind of analysis our model runs automatically on every MLB game. We combine:

  • Both pitchers' xERA
  • Recent trends (last 30 days)
  • Park factors
  • Weather (wind, temperature)
  • Bullpen fatigue
  • Historical head-to-head matchups

Then we generate a probability for each outcome and compare it to market odds.

The Limitations of xERA

What xERA Doesn't Capture

Let's be honest — xERA isn't perfect:

Factor Captured by xERA?
Quality of contact allowed Yes
Strikeouts Indirectly
Walks No
Home runs Partially
Performance with runners on base No
Clutch / high-pressure situations No

A pitcher who issues too many walks will run into trouble even with a strong xERA. Walks lead to runs, and xERA doesn't measure them directly.

The Solution: Combine Multiple Metrics

Never base your analysis on a single metric. Use xERA alongside:

  • WHIP (Walks + Hits per inning) — measures baserunners allowed
  • K% (Strikeout rate) — ability to record outs without contact
  • BB% (Walk rate) — command and control
  • HR/FB (Home runs per fly ball) — long-ball tendency

When xERA Is Most Reliable

Situation xERA Reliability
Sample of 100+ innings High
Sample of 50-100 innings Moderate
Sample of < 50 innings Low
Early season (April) Use with caution
Mid-to-late season Reliable

Early in the season, sample sizes are too small. Wait until late May or early June for xERA to become truly meaningful.

Summary: xERA in 5 Key Takeaways

Point Key Takeaway
1 ERA measures outcomes; xERA measures performance
2 ERA < xERA = lucky pitcher, negative regression ahead
3 ERA > xERA = unlucky pitcher, improvement likely
4 Use xERA for Totals and F5 bets in MLB
5 Combine with other metrics (WHIP, K%, Park Factor)

Why ProbWin Uses xERA

xERA is at the core of our MLB model. Here's why:

The public: Looks at ERA -> Jumps to conclusions -> Bets poorly
ProbWin: Analyzes xERA -> Identifies luck vs. skill gaps -> Finds value bets

Our results on MLB Totals (F5 and Full Game) show that this approach works. Check our verified results to see our baseball picks' track record.

Next step? Understanding how the ballpark influences the score with Park Factors — the other essential variable for MLB betting.
