Most "AI hockey picks" online are a chatbot with a logo bolted on. Ours are not. ProbWin's NHL predictions come from our own machine-learning models, and every one is published before puck drop so you can hold it against the result — wins and losses alike.
Here's how the model actually works, what it weighs, and the one thing we refuse to do that most "pick sites" do every day.
Hockey has one variable that outweighs the rest: the goalie
You can model every other part of a hockey game correctly and still be wrong if you ignore who's in net. A backup starting instead of the ace can swing a game's probability more than any other single factor.
So we do something most "AI hockey picks" skip entirely: we don't publish an official prediction until both starting goalies are confirmed. No guessing, no "probable" starter, no picks built on a lineup that changes at warmups. If the goalies aren't locked, the game stays in analysis — not on the board. That single rule protects you from the most common way hockey models blow up.
Two markets, on purpose
We model the two questions where a disciplined model earns its keep:
| Market | The question it answers | How our model approaches it |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | Who wins the game? | Team strength on offense and defense, the goalie matchup, special teams, recent form and home ice — turned into a win probability for each side. |
| Total (over/under goals) | More or fewer goals than the line? | The two confirmed goalies (save rate, recent form), each team's scoring and defense, and special teams — the model sets the direction, not a gut call. |
We deliberately don't spread ourselves across every exotic market. Fewer, better-modeled questions beat a long menu of shallow ones.
What actually goes into the model
We won't hand over the recipe, but here's the honest ingredient list:
- The confirmed starting goalies — save percentage, goals-against, recent form and workload. This is the heaviest input, and it's why we wait for confirmation.
- Team strength — scoring and goal prevention, weighted toward recent games.
- Special teams — power play and penalty kill efficiency, computed from real game data, because a hot power play quietly decides tight games.
- Recent form and head-to-head — the model tracks how a team is actually playing now, not a stale season line.
- Home ice — a real, measurable edge, sized honestly rather than assumed.
The rigor that makes it real
This is where most "AI picks" fall apart, and where we spend our effort.
1. Confirmed goalies or it doesn't ship. Covered above — but it's the difference between a real model and a guess dressed up as one.
2. We only mark a pick official where the model has proven it's calibrated. Calibration is the honest test: when the model says a side wins 65% of the time, does it actually? We check that across our history, and a market only becomes an official pick in the ranges where it repeatedly hit its stated probability. Everything else stays a clearly-labeled trend, never sold as a pick.
3. We cut what doesn't work — including our own ideas. We're ruthless about removing anything that adds noise instead of signal. We've retired features, patterns, and even a whole "self-learning" component of our own system when the data showed it was hurting accuracy rather than helping. Fewer moving parts, more honest calls.
What we do not claim
Being useful means being honest about the limits:
| We do | We don't |
|---|---|
| Publish a probability for every pick, before puck drop | Promise you'll win — hockey is high-variance, and cold streaks are normal |
| Wait for confirmed goalies before an official pick | Rush out picks on projected or backup starters to fill a board |
| Keep a permanent, timestamped record — wins and losses | Hide the bad nights or quietly reset the scoreboard |
| Mark a pick "official" only where the model proved calibrated | Sell "locks," "guaranteed winners," or a fantasy strike rate |
We're not promising to out-trade the sharpest books on every line — that's a different game, and anyone guaranteeing it is selling something. Some of our reads land ahead of where the market closes, others don't, and not as often as we'd like — we'd rather say so than dress it up. What we do deliver, night after night, is a calibrated, independent read on games where the goalies are locked and the model has earned the right to speak.
How to use it
- Start with the board. Open the NHL picks page: every eligible game gets an analysis, and official picks are separated from trends.
- Read the reasoning, not just the pick. The analysis is the product — the pick is the summary.
- Judge us on a real sample. The record is public and timestamped, so you can measure us over a season, not a lucky week.

Hockey rewards discipline — waiting for the right spot, respecting variance, trusting a process over a hunch. That's exactly what a well-built model is for.
