What Is a High-Danger Chance?

The Definition

A High-Danger Chance (HDC) is a shot attempt from a zone with a high probability of scoring — typically the slot (the area directly in front of the net).

The Problem with Corsi Alone

Corsi counts all shot attempts. But a team can have strong Corsi numbers by shooting a lot... from far away.

A team with high HDCF will score... eventually. If they're not scoring, it's bad luck (exceptional opposing goalie, posts, etc.).

A team with high HDCA will allow goals. If they don't, it's thanks to the goalie.

HDSV%: The Goalies' Response

Definition

High-Danger Save Percentage (HDSV%) measures the percentage of saves on high-danger shots.

Why It Matters

A goalie can have an overall SV% of .915 but an HDSV% of .780 — their GSAx will expose this weakness. It means: - They stop the easy shots - They get beaten on the real tests

That goalie is vulnerable. Against a team that generates lots of HDCF, they will crack.

Strategy #1: Compare HDCF vs Opponent HDCA

To estimate a team's goal output:

Team A HDCF vs Team B HDCA = Danger created by A
Team A HDCF Team B HDCA Signal
High (12+) High (12+) A will score
High (12+) Low (< 8) Tough matchup for A
Low (< 8) High (12+) A can score despite their style

Strategy #2: Identify Teams "Living on Borrowed Time"

A team with: - High HDCA (allows a lot of danger) - Low GA/game (allows few goals)

Is living on borrowed time. The goalie is performing miracles, but it won't last.

Signal: HDCA > 12 but GA < 2.5
Action: Look for the Over in their games

Strategy #3: Spot Undervalued Teams

A team with: - High HDCF (creates a lot of danger) - Low GF/game (doesn't score much)

Is unlucky. They should be scoring more than they are — a value bet waiting to be exploited.

Signal: HDCF > 12 but GF < 2.8
Action: Look for their puck line or Over when they play

Strategy #4: The HD Matchup

For Totals betting, analyze the crossover:

Penalty Kill (PK)

While shorthanded, HD Chances against rise:
